Adrian McKinty
Class/Genre:   Mystery

McKinty is new on the scene of suspense fiction, and he's an author to keep an eye out for. In this debut novel, he introduces us to Michael Forsythe, a native of Belfast, now a resident of New York City. The action is set in the early 1990's before the mayoral term of Rudolph Guilani, with gangs of various nationalities carving out turf for themselves in Harlem, the Bronx, and areas of Queens. Michael is a shrewd, discerning crook. He's a veteran of the British Army, well read, but with an impetuous streak. The book is filled with references to classical literature, Shakespeare, and well known poetry, giving the reader a view of his persona which operates to keep us rooting for him to prevail.

His infatuation with the girlfriend of the head of his Irish American gang sets off a chain of revenge, escape, adventure, and murder. Before the book is over we have been to Harlem dives, the glitzy resorts of Cancun, a hellish Mexican prison, a compassionate jungle village, a trek across the US from West to East, and back to the protection of a Dominican drug lord in New York City.

The action concludes in 21st century Los Angeles, and as the book draws to a close, we are aware that the cycle is beginning all over again.
