Denise Mina
Class/Genre:   Mystery
Series: Maureen O'Donnell # 2
...

The second entry in Mina's trilogy featuring protagonist Maureen O'Donnell. Maureen is not the usual stereotype of a suspense novel protagonist - Recently a patient in a psychiatric hospital, a survivor of incestuous child abuse, and struggling to find a stable life for herself. In the first book, Maureen suceeded in running her lover's murderer to ground, but the police remain suspicious of her. She is working at a shelter for abused women, and when one of the residents disappears and later is discovered mutilated and dead in London, Maureen's curiosity is aroused. She visits the dead woman's husband and children. Unable to picture him as a likely suspect, she attempts to retrace the dead woman's movements between Glasgow & London.

We see a gritty, determined society in this set of books. Yet Mina succeeds in bringing to life a character whom we can understand and root for.
