This first novel by British writer John Baker is a winner. Baker
writes with humor and originality.

Sam Turner seems to be coming out of a long losing streak. His first wife died, he is recently divorced from a second. At an evening men's group he introduces himself as a private investigator even though he¹s not.

Then someone calls offering him what seems like a simple job, and he agrees. Things quickly turn complicated. A TV interview brings him more business and he is off and running.

Along the way he picks up help in a variety of places. Baker does characterization uncommonly well. Turner¹s employees make you laugh and tug at the heartstrings. You will want to get to know them better. If the good guys can bring a smile, the crimes tend to be dark.

The book moves along smoothly and leaves you wanting more.
