I'm kind of late to the Carol O'Connell bandwagon. I read the first Mallory book, MALLORY'S ORACLE, a few months ago and really liked it a lot, and I'll get through the series. But after a spirited recommendation while at Black Orchid a couple of weeks back, I picked up this book, which is the standalone, and started reading it a day or so again. Couldn't put the damn thing down.

Frankly, I loved it. It's creepy as hell and a damn good police procedural. The main female character, Ali Cray, is as tough as they come--she's got a scar on her face that she embraces, and while she's very different from Mallory, they are certainly cut from the same cloth. Nobody does tough women quite like O'Connell does.

And Rouge Kendall, the other main character, whose twin sister was murdered a decade and a half prior to the events in this book, is a very compelling character as well. As are many, many others-- there's a scene that takes place between a jailed priest and Ali's uncle, a psychologist, that had me gasping.

So since I want to read CRIME SCHOOL at some point soon, now I've got all these Mallory books to devour....can't wait!
