Real life guest character was Beatrix Potter. The authors did a wonderful job of interweaving the Potter stories into this tale creating characters which would be the inspiration for Potter's characters. The story revolves around the murder of a constable at the beginning of the book and the disappearance of a child. Usually I avoid stories revolving around children who are murdered, abused, kidnapped etc. And if I trip over one I can't manage to finish it. Even with a missing child as a plot, the Beatrix Potter elements in the story were so strong I could actually picture her illustrations as Farmer MacGregor, Jemima Puddleduck and Benjamin Bunny met Miss Potter. The whole effect was charming.

The growth of the romance between Kate Ardley aka the novelist Beryl Bardwell and Sir Charles Sheridan moved a long nicely without being overdone.

Definitely 5 paws
