I've gotten in such a pattern reading cozy mysteries I had forgotten the joy of reading a first class literary endeavor. This is well woven complex plot concerning the suspicious death of a heroic abolitionist golden boy at the beginning of the American Civil war. From the first paragraph "Faded Coat of Blue"" is breathtaking. The historical detail, rich pageant of visual pictures, intriguing plot and multifaceted characters from all over the world interwoven with true historical events and characters captivated me immediately and held my attention to the very last page.
While there are many quiet moments, it is a sweeping story in scale far beyond the average scope of the mystery genre. I would be more inclined to compare it to the story telling of John Jakes, or Stephen Lawhead. I cannot imagine a mystery fan regardless of subgenre preference that would not enjoy this book. It would not offend those who prefer the cozy mystery, but it has enough suspense, noir, and action adventure for those who enjoy the other end of the spectrum.
