Mary, Mary
Ed McBain
Class/Genre:   Mystery   Private Investigator
Series: Matthew Hope # 10
Simon & Schuster, Mar 1999, $23.00, 299 pp.

Margaret Mitchell and her infant child left Dublin for New Zealand about two decades ago. Over the subsequent years, Margaret became an internationally renowned psychiatrist, who is an expert on women's mental health issues. After all the years away, Margaret and her daughter Mary finally return to Ireland to provide comfort to her dying mother.

However, tragedy strikes when a vicious killer abducts, mutilates, and murders Mary. As Margaret thinks lovingly back on her daughter, the police catch the unrepentant murderer. In the trial that ensues, Margaret tries to understand why he did what he did to her daughter.

MARY, MARY is an incredible novel that is must reading for anyone who wants to look inside the heads of the killer, the victim, the victim's family, and the police. The story line is brilliant as perspectives constantly but logically shift. The developing psychological relationships among the four prime players make the Parsons tale a wonderful novel. If this debut is any example of her talent, Julie Parson appears to have a long successful career as a novelist.
