Witty, erudite, satirical are a few of the adjectives referring to Lev Raphaelčs books, and they are right. Raphael loves words, and literary references abound. Yet his protagonist Nick is not without charm.

Nick Hoffman is a middle-aged professor at a nearby college in a long term relationship with partner Stefan, also a professor at the same college. When Nick finds the body of the head trainer in the steam room of his gym, trouble ensues. Nick is a prime suspect, and with his friend Juno tries to discover what happened. The victim Vlado was involved with a lot of women from the club, had political ties to Croatia, was disliked by the other trainers; all many reasons for someone to want him gone.

Other mystery plots often end with the protagonist suddenly finding himself in danger from the killer, or with the suspects all gathered in a room while the detective points out the perpetrator. This ending is so much classier and sweeter. Ičll be looking for more Raphael.
