Liz Hanlon is a composer and performer trying to follow her dream, even if it means playing on a piano that is falling apart at Brogino's Bar & Grille to keep a roof over her head. Music is too much a part of Liz for her to give it up or quit trying, so she is thrilled when she gets a break that could make her career and put her and her group in the spotlight. Unfortunately, she has begun receiving messages that frighten her, and she is afraid she is being stalked. When she stumbles, literally, over the body of her cousin, she isn't sure if she is a suspect, the next target, or even if the two things are related.
So begins a journey into the world of music. A world of old scandals and new careers, and a glimpse into the heart and mind of a composer. Liz Hanlon is a gutsy lady not willing to give up her dream to become someone else's cheering section, "a trade off she can live with", but when she gets in over her head, she's not afraid to ask for help. Enter big brother, Carl, and assortment of sympathetic characters who add to the mix.
I found "High Notes are Murder" fascinating. No gore. No steamy sex. Just a well-crafted mystery that was a welcome break. Barbara Reed is definitely a new author to try. And, if you're "in the mood" with this book, you might just also enjoy the CD, too - I do!
