Series: Inspector Banks # 14

The latest installment in this highly entertaining series featuring Inspector Alan Banks. Called to the scene of a fatal fire in the middle of the night, Banks and the other investigators on the team find that a fire set deliberately on one floating barge has spread to another barge nearby and a young woman who had lived there is dead, along with the resident of the target of the arson.

We are immediately drawn into a complex scenario of interlocking crimes, ranging from the original arson to a stupefying mix of child abuse, art forgery, identity theft, and extortion. Banks, his former girlfriend officer Annie Cabot, and other continuing characters follow leads which take them to London, as well as other parts of Yorkshire and the north of England untangling clues as they go, while more unsettling discoveries pile up. The conclusion leaves Banks in hospital, with a startling personal loss to contend with, and the perpetrator of the arson/extortion slipping through the investigative net.

As usual, Robinson has come up with a winner!
