Class/Genre: Mystery Legal Setting
This is the second mystery novel about Gordon Seegerman, and it follows much the same entertaining path as the first. Gordon is a public defender who is determined to spend most of his time on the simplest, easiest cases while he puts his heart and soul into his Manilow cover band, his unrequited passion for his ex-girlfriend, and his responsibilities for his father, lost in the throes of Alzheimer's Disease. Ferdie, Gordon's grandfather, insists that Gordon represent his wife's godson. This appears to be Gordon's type of case - the boy, a high school football hero and soon-to-be graduate, has been accused of a minor crime involving the mascot of a rival school. Of course the case doesn't stay simple for long.
This book, like the first one in the series, "Misdemeanor Man", combines a cleverly plotted mystery and a likeable protagonist. Although the book is light in tone, the ambivalence of Gordon's relationship with his father shows a more complex side to a man who initially appears to be devoted to nothing more than figuring out how to spend the least possible amount of energy to his job and the greatest possible amount to impressing Barry Manilow with his tribute band, the Mandys. The combination of Gordon, his friends and family, and the mystery result in novel which is well above average for the genre.
