Dylan Schaffer
Class/Genre: Mystery Legal Setting
Bloomsbury, 2005, 337 pages
Schaffer is a fresh new voice on the stage of crime fiction! His protagonist Gordon Seegerman is an assistant public defender in a small community in the Bay Area of California. He has a father lost to Alzheimers, an alcoholic brother, a loving grandfather, a not so secret torch for a former girl friend, and best of all - he has organized an amateur musical group devoted to performing cover versions of Barry Manilow's entire repetoire.
As his band prepares for a short stint in Las Vegas where they hope to meet their musical icon in person, Gordy is assigned the misdemeanor case of a popular high school football hero accused of taking the canine mascot of an opposing team. Thinking that the entire matter will be wrapped up in very short order, Gordy is startled when events spiral onto a public center stage. It seems that the football hero has been involved with a prominent local woman who has unfortunately been found shot to death.
Although his legal assignment remains confined to the case of the missing dog, the issues raised by the murder case begin to absorb his days and nights. And try as he might, Gordy cannot prevent events from threatening his long cherished hope to meet Barry Manilow in person.
Suspenseful, funny, poignant, and a terrific read.
