In 1834, the legendary Davy Crocket publishes his autobiography with scathing results from the literary critics. Crocket begins a literary tour of the major eastern cities, planning to make one particular visit on an individual named Poe whose comments were even uglier than all the others that had been written. When he reaches Baltimore, Crocket demands Poe apologize for his viscous attack or fight a duel of honor.

However, before the two men can resolve their dispute, Crocket finds his landlady has been murdered, with "Nevermore" written in blood on a nearby wall. Poe and Crocket decide to combine their mutual talents to uncover the identity of the murderer. Instead, they find an active serial killer making the citizens of Baltimore the target of his works.

The underlying theme to NEVERMORE is brilliant and the two lead characters are a formidable pair, whose distinct personalities and their relationship appears very realistic. Early nineteenth century Baltimore also comes across as an interesting locale. However, the action never fully takes off and more often bogs downs, leaving readers wondering how this historical mystery with such a wonderful premise falls short. Still, Harold Schechter is clearly a creative and skilled writer, who bears future watching by sub-genre fans.
