Roberta Spivey has spent fifteen years of her comfortable middle class life smoothing things over and trying to keep everyone around her happy, from her husband, Warren, to her boss, Mr. Winkleman. She even helped Warren work through his obsession with his long-ago girlfriend. But when Warren announces he wants a divorce so he can marry his ex- girlfriend, Roberta has had enough. She has her hair cut and dyed red, says good- bye to her boss and her job, and follows her estranged husband to the small town of Cottonmouth. There, she rents a cottage across the road from the home of a reputed serial killer and starts to explore her surroundings.

Bobbie - formerly Roberta - bounces through Cottonmouth meeting and investigating the reputed serial killer, her husband Warren, his married girlfriend, and an assortment of other characters. Then someone is murdered, and her investigations take a more dangerous direction.

The story is fluffy light entertainment in spite of touching on such serious issues as divorce and depression. However, the periodic sex scenes tended to stop the flow of the story. I felt impatient - I kept thinking 'Yes, yes, I get it, she thinks Nick is sexy and, like many a scorned woman, she's looking for someone new.' I suspect such scenes are required in this genre, but in my opinion, they detracted from the amusing tale of Roberta/Bobbie's reaction to her husband's infatuation.
