Poisoned Pen Press continues to find absorbing crime tales. This is the beginning of a new series by Susan Slater. It features crime-solver Dan Mahoney. Mahoney is an experienced weary, insurance investigator. He's in Tatum, New Mexico, trying to determine if the company should pay off insurance claims for a number of prized, highly insured cattle. The claims are large, the scams are intricate and the characters are often amazing. This is a terrific novel.

A flash flood, puts Mahoney in the middle of an intricate murder plot, a love affair, and some truly incredible if eminently believable high jinks. I really enjoyed the author's voice and her attitude toward her material. I'm waiting eagerly for the next installment.
