Series: Tory Baver
Avon, Nov 1998, $5.99, 277 pp.

Waitress Tory Baver knows that Aphrodite Ferguson, owner of the Delphi Café in South Dakota, has been a part of her life as long as she can remember. Tory feels her boss is a good friend. Tory could never have guessed that an innocent looking elderly male taking heart medicine could cause so much tragedy. However, when the man dies in the men's room of the café, she realizes from Aphrodite's children (Alanna and Brian) that the deceased was the spouse of her friend.

Aphrodite asks Tory to meet her at the café where they hold a private discussion. When Aphrodite drives away, her car abruptly explodes. Tory and Alanna equally inherit the café. However, Tory feels she must uncover the identity of her friend's killer before she can go on with her own life.

MOURNING SHIFT is Kathleen Taylor's best novel to date as she invigorates her heroine by providing her with a new direction while closing out a less interesting twist. Ms. Taylor makes her characters seem very real as she imbues them with flaws, sins, and transgressions. This is an amateur sleuth series that has taken off, making it worth reading by sub-genre fans, which will want Ms. Taylor's next novel released yesterday.
