St. Martin’s Press, 2004, 413 pp.

Dara, so named by her mother Eve, who knew from her first look at her baby girl that this child would be daring and Dara suited her. The reader is introduced to Dara in the prologue of the book that describes the last evening of Dara’s life.

Three years later a body is washed up in the flooding of the Ohio River. Although Dara’s father, Ames Prince, is convinced this is not his daughter because he has received letters from her in the time she has been away, Christine Ireland, manager of the Prince Jewelry store owned by Ames Prince and former ward of Dara’s father is convinced otherwise. As the story develops you are introduced to Deputy Michael Winter, divorced, and recently moved to town to live in his grandfather’s home. You will meet one of my favorite characters, Jeremy Ireland, Christine’s brother who is mentally challenged yet develops a brilliant talent for jewelry design.

After Jeremy and Christine discover Dara’s diary Christine finds herself in danger and more murder occurs rocking the community and throwing suspicion in every direction.

Thompson combines suspense, murder and romance to make an excellent read.
