Class/Genre: Mystery Romance Romantic Suspense
January 2006; Better Be Write Publishing, 300 pp.
If you are looking for the “traditional” mystery, let me clarify up front, this is not one. It probably falls into the sub-genre, Romantic Suspense, but definitely has many of the Romance Novel ideas and philosophies. Also, for those that prefer to keep their reading PG-13, at least not R due to Sexual Behavior, this is not the book for you. There is consenting adult sexual activity in Jill 9.
“Jill 9” is the 9th possible victim of a serial killer, all killing women named Jill Walker. Ian Hamlin is the FBI Special Agent hunting for the killer. Jill Wallokowski has taken the name Jill Walker as the local TV meteorologist, unaware of the danger she has put herself in. Seeking out Jill Walkers, Agent Hamlin realizes he knew this ‘Jill’ briefly in his teens. When he arrives in Vancouver, WA to provide protection and attempt to catch the serial killer, he finds himself immensely attracted to her, but she is dating his former best friend from high school. Despite all the ‘romance’ drama, Ian Hamlin focuses on protecting Jill and investigating the killer.
JD Tynan creates a dramatic, tense triangle with Jill, Agent Hamlin and her boyfriend, Elias Webber in the present as well as their past. The mystery plot, though secondary, is well-developed. The story moves smoothly, between the present and the past. If you enjoy the romantic suspense genre, this is a well-written, entertaining story for you.
