Stephen Larkin is a disillusioned tabloid journalist in London who reluctantly accepts an assignment to cover a gangland funeral back home in Newcastle. Years earlier he had left sick and disgusted and vowed never to return but the pull of the city and the promise of a juicy story persuade him to return. Andy, the photographer, sent on assignment with Stephen is quite the character also.

Once there he immediately runs into his ex-girlfriend Charlotte who asks him to look into the suicide of her friend Mary. Nothing is quite as simple as it first appears. The more Stephen looks into Mary’s apparent suicide, the more questions he develops.

Quite a dark but quick read. I got confused a little on the characters later in the book but it became clear who all the characters were by the end of the book. Stephen was a character I really enjoyed along with his growing friendship with Andy. Will look for more Stephen Larkin books to see where he goes from here.
