Deep Water Death is the second Luanne Fogarty novel from Glynn Marsh Alam, and the book where the series' particular pleasures lock into place. A diving instructor is found dead in a cave system that he taught in regularly, and the police are happy to call it an accident. Luanne is not.

Alam continues to write the cave-diving subculture with the kind of insider precision that the form rewards. The technical detail (the rebreather rig setup, the cave-line procedures, the very specific terror of a flashlight failure in a flooded passage) is rendered with care. The Panhandle small-town politics are sharp.

Three stars. A pleasant regional cozy. Recommended to mystery readers who like their detectives in unusual physical environments.
