Hunting Season puts Anna Pigeon on the Natchez Trace Parkway, the long National Park Service road that runs from Tennessee through Mississippi. The initial case is a deer-poaching investigation that quickly involves the death of a park employee and a network of off-park crimes that the local sheriffs have been unwilling to address.
Nevada Barr handles the Mississippi setting with the kind of care that she brings to all her park-specific entries. The Trace geography (the historical layers, the small communities along the road, the wildlife) is rendered with attention. Anna's personal life continues to evolve, and a romance subplot that has been quietly developing gets significant page time here.
Four stars. A strong mid-period Pigeon. Recommended to series readers and to fans of regional crime fiction set in particular American landscapes.
