Promises of Home is the third book in Jeff Abbott's Jordan Poteet series, and the one where the small-town formula sharpens into something more emotionally serious. A former close friend of Jordan's has come back to Mirabeau after years away, and the welcome-home gathering ends with a death that drags Jordan into another investigation and into the parts of his own past he had managed to forget.

Abbott uses the small-town form to do what it is supposed to do: make every connection complicated. The friendship between Jordan and the returnee is rendered with care. The ongoing care for Jordan's mother and her Alzheimer's continues to be a quietly devastating thread. The case resolves in a place that costs Jordan more than the previous two books did.

Four stars. The series gets stronger as it goes. Read in order.
