Sabotage is a Lawrence Block-edited anthology drawn from Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine, with the kind of curated editorial frame Block brings to all his anthology work. The selections cover several decades of AHMM publication and range across the form's major registers: hard-boiled, domestic suspense, psychological thriller, comic crime.
The Hitchcock magazine has been one of the form's most consistent short-fiction venues for sixty years, and the anthology gives a useful overview of what the magazine has been doing. The selections include several writers whose names will be familiar (Ed McBain, Lawrence Block himself, Donald Westlake under his Tucker Coe byline) and several whose names will not be.
Four stars. Recommended to readers of short crime fiction. The editorial frame is light but the selection is strong.
