Book Of Love is one of the Andrew M. Greeley anthologies of Catholic-themed love stories, with the priest-novelist gathering his own pieces and several from other writers whose work he wanted to put in front of his audience. The Catholic-intellectual romantic register the volume operates in is Greeley's particular comfort zone.
The Greeley contributions are the strongest pieces. His comfort with the sociological-romantic mode (working-class Chicago Irish-Catholic protagonists, slowly developing relationships, theological undercurrent) has earned its readership across decades of his work. The other contributions are more variable.
Three stars. Recommended to Greeley readers who know they like his voice. Not the entry point for new readers.
