Emerald Magic is the Andrew Greeley-edited anthology of Irish fantasy stories, with the priest-novelist using his editorial authority to bring together a genuinely strong roster: Jane Yolen, Andrew Greeley himself, Charles de Lint, Diane Duane, Morgan Llywelyn, Jacqueline Carey, Peter Tremayne, and others. The volume gives a useful overview of what contemporary Celtic-themed fantasy has been doing.
The Jane Yolen contribution is one of the strongest pieces. The Charles de Lint piece is in his recognizable Newford urban-fantasy register. The Peter Tremayne contribution is closer to his historical-mystery work. The variety of approaches within the Irish-themed frame is the volume's strength.
Four stars. Recommended to readers of contemporary fantasy who want to see what writers do with a particular cultural source material.
