Catwoman: Tiger Hunt is the kind of media-tie-in novel that nobody admits to reading and that, when they do, they tend to enjoy more than they expected. Lynn Abbey, drawing on her serious-fantasy chops, treats the Catwoman mythos with respect. The plot involves Selina Kyle pursuing a tiger-skin smuggling operation through Hong Kong and back to Gotham, and the international scenes are surprisingly strong.
Abbey writes Selina with the kind of moral complication the comics had been working toward in the period. The action scenes are competent. The book is short and reads quickly.
Three stars. Recommended to Catwoman fans and to readers who want to see what happens when a real fantasy writer takes a comic-book IP seriously. Not essential. Genuinely enjoyable.
