The Nether Scroll is one of the later Lynn Abbey Forgotten Realms novels, and it dives into a part of the setting's ancient history that even devoted Realms readers will probably need to take on faith. The Nether Scrolls are a piece of pre-history magic from the lost empire of Netheril, and the book follows a small ensemble trying to recover one before it falls into hands that should not have it.
Abbey writes the conspiracy material competently. The setting research is dense enough that newcomers will struggle. The personal stakes for the protagonists are real. The Netherese mythology is handled with care for the source material.
Three stars. Best for Realms readers who already know the lore. Recommended to fans of high-cosmology D&D fantasy.
