The Alice Nestleton "Cat" series by Lydia Adamson is one of those long-running cozy operations that have a specific, very loyal audience. The format is dependable: Alice the actress and cat-sitter stumbles into a mystery in New York City, her cats Bushy and Pancho watch from the windowsill, and the case resolves in around 200 economical pages.

A Cat on Jingle Bell Rock is the holiday-themed Christmas entry, with a murder at a folk-music venue and a victim who was researching old Appalachian carols. The folk-music backdrop is the best part of the book. Alice as a narrator is slightly thinner here than in some of the entries.

Two stars on its own merits, three if you grade cozies on the same curve their fans do. Recommended only for people already inside the series.
