A Cat on Stage Left is the Lydia Adamson novel where she puts Alice Nestleton in the kind of small off-Broadway production environment that has always been the series' best material. Alice is cat-sitting for one of the cast members during a six-week run, and the death of the show's producer brings the inevitable amateur investigation.
The dressing-room geography is the pleasure. Adamson clearly cares about the New York small-theater world and writes the production politics with the kind of affection that the cozy reader can ride with. The mystery resolves quickly. The cats appear when expected.
Three stars. A pleasant cozy. Best for series readers; new readers should start with one of the earlier entries.
