Dark Dreams is one of Dominique Adair's paranormal romance novels, with a telepathic heroine and a vampire hero in the kind of contemporary urban setup the subgenre was producing in volume in the late 2000s. The romance follows the genre rules. The supernatural mechanics are sketched lightly enough to keep the focus on the relationship.
Adair (a different writer from Cherry Adair) has a particular comfort with the form's erotic register, and the book delivers what its readers came for. The plot involves a serial-killer subplot that gives the romance somewhere to take place. The closing chapters land where you expect.
Three stars. A reliable paranormal romance for fans of the subgenre. Best read with no expectations beyond what the form provides.
