Edge of Darkness is one of Cherry Adair's Black Rose Chronicles novels and a useful entry point for new readers because the paranormal-talents setup gets re-explained without belaboring it. The heroine in this one can teleport short distances, the hero is a T-FLAC operative who has reasons to find that interesting, and the global threat involves an opposing organization that is testing teleportation operatives in ways that produce body counts.
Adair's great gift remains the comic register on top of the action. The romance is the engine, the action is the chassis, and both run at a pace that is genuinely satisfying. The protagonist's commitment to her independence keeps the romance honest. The villains are the kind of competent, slightly cartoonish global-bad-guy crew that the form rewards.
Four stars. A solidly enjoyable Black Rose entry. Read after the first few T-FLAC novels for context but it stands well enough on its own.
