The Atlas Six

The Atlas Six is Olivie Blake's 2022 dark-academia fantasy novel, the first volume of the Alexandrian Society trilogy and the canonical contemporary BookTok-era dark-academia title. The structural premise is the secret Alexandrian Society, a fictional academic-mystical order that for several thousand years has been preserving the literal Library of Alexandria (more than half its volumes have been recovered from across history) and that recruits the six strongest magicians of every generation for a year of training in the Society's London headquarters. Only five of the six will be initiated. The novel rotates six third-person POV chapters across the six recruits - Libby Rhodes and Nico Ferrer de Varona (Yale-Princeton-Harvard physicists), Reina Mori (a naturalist from Japan), Parisa Kamali (an empath from Iran), Callum Nova (an empath from Cape Town), and Tristan Caine (a son-of-organized-crime illusionist from London) - across the year of training.

Blake's structural method is the patient six-POV ensemble construction across the year, with the academic-debate-and-magical-experimentation chapters operating as the structural worldbuilding layer and the Libby-Nico and Parisa-Callum-Tristan emotional dynamics carrying the back-third structural reveals. The trilogy started as Blake's self-published Wattpad-and-Patreon serialization in 2020 before BookTok pushed it onto Tor Books's acquisition list in 2022. The novel reads in the dark-academia register Donna Tartt established with The Secret History and that Babel and If We Were Villains have continued to develop. The Libby Rhodes character carries the structural moral weight of the novel; the polyamorous-and-power-dynamics material in the middle third is one of the structural conceits that defined the contemporary BookTok-era dark-academia market.
