Baseball Cat takes Penelope Warren and Mycroft the Abyssinian to a major-league spring-training camp in the Arizona desert when a player on the visiting team is found dead in his rental property. Garrison Allen continues to handle the cozy form with the relaxed confidence of someone who knows what the readers want and is happy to provide it.
The baseball texture is the pleasure. Allen clearly knows the lower-Sonoran spring-training circuit and writes the front office politics, the players' relationships, and the small-town hospitality around the camps with affection. The mystery is fair if not particularly twisty.
Three stars. Series readers will be content. Best read as part of a leisurely Penelope Warren run.
