Stable Cat puts Penelope Warren and Mycroft the Abyssinian at a small Arizona horse-racing track when a trainer is found dead in his tack room. Garrison Allen continues the formula he established in Desert Cat and Royal Cat: a desert-Southwest setting, a community with its own internal social rules, a Marine-veteran heroine who is genuinely tough, and a cat who knows things he is not telling.
The horse-racing texture is the pleasure. Allen clearly knows enough about the lower-tier circuit to write its grit honestly. The mystery is fair.
Three stars. Series readers will be content. A reliable cozy that does what its readers want.
