Movie Cat puts Penelope and Mycroft on the set of a Western being shot in the desert outside Empress Valley, with the inevitable on-set death putting Penelope into amateur-investigator mode. Garrison Allen continues to handle the formula with the relaxed confidence of someone who knows what his readers want.
The film-shoot setting is the pleasure. Allen has a good ear for the back-of-the-trailer crew politics and the way the location department tries to keep a small town happy while taking over its main street. The murder fits the genre rules. The investigation moves quickly.
Three stars. Reliable late-series cozy. Series readers will enjoy it.
