Royal Cat is the second Penelope Warren cozy and sets the formula in motion. The annual Empress Valley Renaissance Faire is the setting, with Penelope (the Marine vet and mystery bookstore owner) drawn in when one of the Faire's organizers is found dead in his caravan after the closing-night feast.
Allen handles the Faire setting with affection rather than mockery. The various reenactor personalities (the king-and-queen-of-the-realm, the food vendors, the duelists) get believable hierarchies and grudges. Mycroft the Abyssinian continues to be the right amount of present rather than the cute genre demands.
Three stars. The case resolves cleanly. Recommended to series readers and Renaissance Faire enthusiasts.
