Night's Edge is the 2004 paranormal romance anthology with original novellas from Charlaine Harris, Maggie Shayne, and Barbara Hambly. The three contributions sit at slightly different points on the vampire-romance spectrum: Harris's is in the early Sookie Stackhouse mode, Shayne's is in her own paranormal-romance tradition, and Hambly's is closer to her literary vampire work in Those Who Hunt the Night.
The Barbara Hambly contribution is the volume's most ambitious; her vampire fiction has always carried more weight than the genre usually allows, and the novella here is in her recognizable Asher-and-Ysidro mode. The Harris piece is solid mid-Sookie. The Shayne contribution is the form running on its expected energy.
Three stars. A pleasant trio of paranormal-romance novellas. Recommended to readers of the form. The Hambly contribution alone is worth the volume for readers of her vampire material.
